The Metamorphosis of Aging: Embracing the Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Chrysalis
As I step into my 39th year, I have been thinking heavily about the narrative we are sold around getting older. Society and marketing campaigns constantly tell us that once women hit a certain age, our beauty fades, our relevance shrinks, and our overall value drops. We are taught to be terrified of our own biology, convinced we need to fight the clock at every turn.
I am officially opting out of that narrative.
There is a harmful misconception in the wellness space that if you are not aggressively fighting the aging process, you are somehow "letting yourself go." But letting yourself go implies apathy. Surrendering, on the other hand, is an active and beautiful choice to move with the seasons of your biology instead of fighting against them.
Getting older is an absolute privilege. For women in their mid-thirties, forties, and beyond, this season is not a winding down. It is a chrysalis. We are literally dissolving the old versions of ourselves to emerge more powerful, gorgeously authentic, and unapologetic.
Here is what is actually happening during this profound metamorphosis.
Chronological Age vs. Biological Age
Before we dive into the chrysalis, we have to rewrite the most fundamental rule of aging: the difference between your chronological age and your biological age.
Chronological Age is simply the number of times you have traveled around the sun. It is an unchangeable metric, and it is the only one society seems to care about.
Biological Age is the actual, physical state of your cells. It is determined by the length of your telomeres, your level of systemic inflammation, and your metabolic flexibility.
You cannot control your chronological age, but through intentional nourishment, nervous system regulation, and lifestyle choices, you have a massive amount of influence over your biological age. You do not have to "act your age" on a cellular level. By supporting your body through small shifts, you can maintain profound vitality and resilience no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake.
The Mental Chrysalis: Rewiring Your Brain
If you are navigating the early whispers of perimenopause and have noticed an increase in brain fog, sudden flashes of irritability, or a fierce, undeniable urge to say "no," you are not going crazy. Your brain is undergoing a massive neurological pruning process.
Estrogen and progesterone are deeply involved in how our brains produce energy. As those hormones naturally begin to fluctuate, the framework of your mind physically changes.
The "Construction Dust" of Brain Fog: When your brain remodels its neural pathways to adapt to new hormone levels, things get messy. As estrogen shifts, our brains temporarily become less efficient at using glucose for energy. That brain fog is just the temporary construction dust kicked up during a major renovation.
Dissolving the People-Pleaser: For decades, our brains have been bathed in hormones that biologically wire us to nurture, accommodate, and keep the peace. As those accommodating hormones shift, the veil lifts. That sudden lack of patience is not you being difficult. It is your brain setting an unshakeable standard for your peace.
✨ The Small Shifts: Fuel the renovation by prioritizing high-quality Omega-3 fats (like eggs, avocados, or walnuts) to give your brain the exact structural energy it needs, and practice fierce self-compassion while your mind does this heavy lifting.
The Physical Chrysalis: Honoring the Shift
This is often the most frustrating phase of the metamorphosis. You might be eating the same foods and doing the exact same workouts, yet your energy flatlines, your waistline shifts, and your sleep is disrupted. Your body is not betraying you—it is recalibrating to a brand new baseline.
Cortisol Sensitivity: As progesterone drops, we naturally become more sensitive to stress. Those high-intensity, exhausting cardio sessions that used to make you feel amazing might now leave you depleted, spiking your cortisol and causing your body to hold onto weight.
The Metabolic Pivot: Declining estrogen changes how we store fat and process carbohydrates, making us naturally less insulin sensitive.
✨ The Small Shifts: It is time to trade the exhausting cardio for heavy lifting and restorative walks. And hear this clearly: It is never too late to build protective muscle. Whether you are 39, 59, or 79, your body is capable of hypertrophy (muscle growth). Muscle is your new metabolic armor. It acts as a sponge for glucose, improves your insulin sensitivity, and protects your shifting joints. Pair this by anchoring every meal with a solid source of protein to stabilize your blood sugar and support the cellular rebuild.
The Spiritual Chrysalis: Stepping into the Wise Woman
The ultimate destination of this metamorphosis is profound spiritual elevation. As the exhausting noise of people-pleasing and self-doubt dissolves in the chrysalis, what emerges is piercing clarity.
Historically, this transition was celebrated. In ancient Celtic, Indigenous, and early matriarchal societies, the post-menopausal woman was the most revered member of the village. She was the "Crone" or the "Wise Woman." These cultures believed that when a woman stopped shedding her blood for the earth, she retained it—keeping her profound life force and spiritual power entirely for herself. She became the shaman, the healer, and the fierce truth-teller.
Embracing this archetype completely changes how we view getting older.
Clarity of Purpose: You no longer have the energy to entertain things that do not align with your soul. Your focus naturally shifts from seeking external validation to cultivating a life of deep, intentional meaning.
Guiding the Next Generation: The Wise Woman sets fierce boundaries so she can show up for her community with genuine, overflowing energy. We finally get to step into our role as a beacon of love and light for the younger brothers and sisters in our midst, offering our hard-earned wisdom through the messy phases we have already survived.
