The Medicine of Water: Nourishing the Mind, Body, and Spirit

Waterfall in middle of woods with pool.

There is something universally hypnotic about moving water. If you have ever stood in front of a waterfall, you know exactly what I mean. You do not just see it; you feel it reverberate in your chest. Our bodies inherently recognize and crave this element because we are, quite literally, bodies of water.

Yet, in our fast-paced, modern world, we often treat water as an afterthought. It becomes just a box to check off on our to-do lists, something we gulp down on the go, or a resource we completely take for granted.

Water does not just sustain life. It teaches us how to flow, adapt, and heal. Let's dive deep into the profound medicine of water and explore how we can harness its power across the pillars of Mind, Body, and Spirit.

The Mental Drop: Finding Your Blue Mind

Have you ever noticed how sitting near a river, listening to the rain, or even taking a long, hot shower instantly dials down your anxiety? That is not just a poetic coincidence. It is biology.

Marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols coined the term "Blue Mind" to describe the mildly meditative, deeply calming state our brains enter when we are near, in, on, or under water. In our modern lives, we spend most of our time in a "Red Mind" state. We are overstimulated, stressed, and constantly bombarded by screens and demands.

Water offers an immediate, sensory reset. The physical sight and sound of moving water actually shift our brain waves from chaotic beta waves (associated with stress and high alert) to calm, creative alpha waves.

✨ The Small Shifts for Your Mind: You do not need to live near the ocean to harness this mental medicine.

  • The Vagus Nerve Reset: Feeling completely overwhelmed or panicked? Splash ice-cold water on your face. This immediate temperature shift stimulates your vagus nerve, instantly lowering your heart rate and pulling your brain out of a fight-or-flight response.

  • The Mindful Shower: Stop treating your daily shower like a rushed, robotic task. Close your eyes, focus entirely on the sound and feeling of the water, and consciously visualize the day's overstimulation physically washing off your body and going down the drain.

The Physical Drop: True Cellular Hydration and Safe Soaking

We hear "drink more water" constantly. But here is a hard truth of holistic wellness: not all water is created equal.

If you are chugging gallons of "empty, dead water" (water that has been completely stripped of its natural minerals through aggressive purification) you are not actually hydrating. In fact, you might be actively flushing out the vital electrolytes your body desperately needs! True hydration happens at the cellular level, and water requires minerals to actually enter your cells to produce energy, regulate your systems, and clear out toxins.

We also need to call out the reality of "plastic tea." When we drink from single-use plastic bottles, especially those that have been sitting in warm warehouses or hot cars, we are ingesting water leached with microplastics and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. This creates massive chaos for our hormones.

✨ The Small Shifts for Hydration:

  • Bring It Back to Life: You can easily remineralize your filtered water! Simply add a pinch of high-quality, mineral-rich sea salt (like Celtic or pink Himalayan) or a splash of trace mineral drops. This gives your water the electrical charge it needs to truly penetrate your cells.

  • Ditch the Plastic: Swap the single-use plastic for a glass or high-quality stainless steel water bottle. This is one of the easiest and most profound shifts you can make to protect your endocrine system.

A Note on the Pool: Mitigating Chlorine

We also interact with water externally, and our skin is our largest organ. Summer pool days are a beautiful joy we should absolutely participate in. Wellness should never be rooted in fear-mongering or an "all or nothing" mindset! However, it is important to be aware that chlorine is a harsh chemical that disrupts our microbiome and can act as a neurotoxin. We do not have to avoid the pool; we just need a strategy.

✨ The Small Shifts for Safe Soaking:

  • The Sponge Effect: Before jumping into a chlorinated pool, thoroughly drench your skin and hair with clean, fresh water in the showers. Your body acts like a sponge. If it is already saturated with clean water, it will absorb significantly less chlorine! Always rinse off immediately after, too.

  • The Vitamin C Hack: Vitamin C naturally neutralizes chlorine. Keep a simple spray bottle of water mixed with a little ascorbic acid (Vitamin C powder) in your pool bag. Spritz it on your skin and hair after your swim to neutralize the chemical residue.

The Spiritual Drop: Becoming the Sacred Caretakers

Finally, we arrive at the spiritual medicine of water. Water is the ultimate teacher. It shows us how to flow around obstacles, adapt to any container, and persistently carve through solid rock over time. To "be like water" is a beautiful reminder to stop forcing outcomes and start softening our edges.

There is an even deeper spiritual connection here, beautifully articulated by Robin Wall Kimmerer in her incredible book, Braiding Sweetgrass. Sharing the Indigenous wisdom of her ancestors, she explains the sacred, balancing roles between the elements:

  • The Fire Keepers: In this tradition, men are the fire keepers. They tend the spark, the heat, and the transformative, consuming energy.

  • The Water Bearers: Women are the sacred caretakers of the water. We carry the fluid of life within our own bodies, creating the exact amniotic environment needed to grow and sustain new life. We are biologically and spiritually tied to the tides, the moon, and the life-giving nourishment of water.

✨ The Small Shift for Your Spirit: Honor your inherent role as a water bearer. The next time you pour yourself a glass of water, do not just mindlessly gulp it down. Take a single, intentional breath. Acknowledge the life-giving medicine you are taking into your body, and remember that your deep nature is not to force or burn, but to flow, nourish, and adapt.
