Carrying The Weight of The World

The Crushing Weight of the Macro

If you have looked at the news lately and felt a heavy, exhausting ache in your chest, you are far from alone. Between the current political climate, intense global suffering, and the realities of the patriarchal systems we navigate, it legitimately feels like the world is on fire. As women, we are practically conditioned to serve as society's emotional shock absorbers. We take so much in, feeling the injustice in our bones. Absorbing all that heat does not put out the flames.. it simply depletes our reserves and dysregulates our bodies. There is enduring wisdom in the Serenity Prayer: finding the grace to accept the macro-crises we cannot individually fix, the courage to change what we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. A depleted, exhausted woman cannot sustainably fight for a better world.

Navigating the Messy Middle

When we consume a constant stream of global news, our primal brain genuinely struggles to differentiate between a crisis unfolding on a glowing screen and an immediate physical threat standing right in our living room. Staying informed frequently crosses the line from bearing witness to actively flooding your nervous system with stress hormones. This biological reality brings us to the messy middle: the profound guilt that surfaces when we experience personal peace while the wider world is suffering. It is imperative to hold two distinct truths simultaneously. You can feel immense empathy for global crises while intentionally cultivating a joyful micro-life. Joy is a profound biological necessity that serves as the physiological fuel preventing your nervous system from collapsing.

Somatic Boundaries as Activism

We are culturally conditioned to believe that caring deeply requires suffering. In a digital landscape that monetizes our attention, prioritizing a regulated nervous system becomes an act of quiet, radical rebellion. If your personal advocacy relies on your own chronic depletion, the broken systems are still winning. Establishing firm somatic boundaries means recognizing that your finite physical energy is your most valuable resource. Protecting your peace is an active preparation, allowing you to transition from a state of panicked reactivity into a deeply grounded force for change.

Your Somatic Shifts for Sustainable Empathy

  • Release and Reallocate: Identify one massive, global issue sending you into a spiral, cross it off your mental to-do list, and pick one aligned micro-action you can take locally (like donating to a community pantry or checking on a neighbor).

  • Honor the Threshold: Notice the exact moment when bearing witness turns into flooding, and intentionally step away from the screen before your system dysregulates.

  • The Information Fast: Claim a 12-hour window to intentionally fast from all external news, using that reclaimed space to tune completely into your physical environment.

You do not have to carry the whole world; you just have to carry your piece of it.
